Acupuncture: Ancient Needles, Modern Science
Rooted in 3,000 years of Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture is one of the most studied complementary therapies in the world. Dr. Bravata explains how it works, what the research shows, and who benefits most.
Acupuncture: Ancient Needles, Modern Science
Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and practiced for over 3,000 years, acupuncture involves the insertion of ultra-fine, sterile needles at specific anatomical points. Modern research has identified several mechanisms: endorphin release, nervous system modulation, anti-inflammatory effects, and connective tissue stimulation.
The evidence base is strong for chronic pain, migraine prevention, chemotherapy-induced nausea, osteoarthritis, and anxiety. A landmark 2012 meta-analysis of nearly 18,000 patients found acupuncture significantly more effective than both sham acupuncture and no treatment for chronic pain.
