The Do's & Don'ts of the Abundant Life
Chapter 16 of Live Free or Diet is Dr. Bravata's most direct chapter — a clear-eyed list of the habits that destroy health and the practices that build it.
The Do's & Don'ts of the Abundant Life
"This chapter is intentionally oversimplified and reductive for the purpose of clarity but with the understanding that making right choices is rarely easy. Doing so is a moment-by-moment process that takes moral clarity, strong will power, and great determination." — Kurt Bravata, M.D., Live Free or Diet
The Don'ts
- Don't be addicted. Cherish and protect your body.
- Don't drink to intoxication. Long-term alcohol use causes irreversible brain atrophy and dementia.
- Don't overeat. Fill your plate with protein and low-carb sides. Stop eating when full.
- Don't be sedentary. Wasting daytime hours on the couch causes muscle atrophy and dangerous blood clots.
- Don't be a screen slave. Hours of screen time result in poor concentration, reduced creativity, and loss of productivity.
- Don't hold grudges. Praying for those who wronged you can lead to healing.
- Don't worry. As Luke 12:25 (NIV): "Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?"
The Do's
- Do meditate more. Anchor the soul and reduce cortisol.
- Do pray more. A powerful tool to change mindsets and improve outcomes.
- Do exercise more. Reduces chronic pain, lowers anxiety, improves sleep and mood.
- Do eat more protein. Protein builds muscle; muscle burns fat.
- Do hydrate and detox. Our body is 70% water.
- Do get grounded. Walking barefoot on earth reduces inflammation and improves sleep.
