Triggers and the Battlefield of the Mind

Kurt Bravata, M.D.

Recovery is not only putting the bottle, the pill, the bet, or the phone down. It is learning the places, people, and thoughts that pull you back — and deciding, again, whose voice will govern your mind.

Based on Chapter 18 of Live Free or Diet

Recovery is not only putting the bottle, the pill, the bet, or the phone down. It is learning the places, people, and thoughts that pull you back — and deciding, again, whose voice will govern your mind.

"It is important to recognize the temptations that could lead to relapse."
— Live Free or Diet

Patients tell me they already know their triggers. The work is acting on that knowledge before the craving finishes the sentence.

Know Your Triggers

Common ones are ordinary, which is why they win. The gas station. The convenience store. The supermarket aisle. The liquor store where the habit used to live. For others it is the casino, the old neighborhood, the website, the gambling app, the social feed that spikes anxiety and then offers a cheap hit of relief.

You may not be able to avoid every one of those places forever. You can decide not to walk into them alone while you are still weak. Shop somewhere else until you are stronger. If you must go back — work, family, a recovery step — take a person who will keep you accountable. Filters and monitoring software are not distrust of yourself. They are how you stop fighting a digital slot machine with willpower at midnight.

The same rule applies to pornography and "antisocial media." Bring the habit into the light. A secret is half the addiction.

The Battlefield of the Mind

People ask why we have such self-destructive cravings if we were made in God's image. The short answer is Genesis: love required free will, and free will required the possibility of choosing wrongly.

Sin is a thought or act that violates God's will for us. Evil is the absence of good — as darkness is the absence of light. Satan's rebellion did not cancel our dignity. It opened a war for our attention.

"Satan's oldest weapon is the manipulation of the human mind to the undoing of our eternal souls. Hence, the battlefield of the mind is the greatest turf war of all time."

We are not slaves. We are free-will agents. That is the honor and the danger. Victory is not white-knuckling forever. It is freely submitting to the Lord's will and letting the Holy Spirit govern what used to run on autopilot.

"Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace."
— Romans 8:5–6 (NIV)

Purpose Before Pleasure

Entertainment often fills a void that was meant for communion with God. Dopamine was never supposed to be the goal. It was meant to help us do the essential work of a human life — relationship, vocation, worship, love.

"The paradox we ultimately come to discover is that it is not in the pursuit of happiness itself that we become satisfied but rather through the pursuit of God-given purpose and the consequential virtue that develops in the process."

Chase pleasure as the point and you get emptiness. Align the heart with God and His desires start to become your own. That is the only satisfaction that does not demand a bigger dose tomorrow.

"'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'"
— Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

The devil pushes. The Lord leads. Follow peace.

Hardship is not proof you are failing. Much of a good life is learned by enduring what you wanted to escape. What you sow, you reap — in the body and in the spirit. Sweat equity still applies after Eden. The work now is to bring beauty out of ashes and run the race with endurance.

You do not have to feel ready. Name the trigger. Do not walk in alone. Put the mind under a better government. Seek purpose, not the next hit.
